Department of Educator Preparation and Leadership

Timothy Makubuya is currently an Associate Professor of Education in the College of Education at University of Missouri- St. Louis (UMSL). Dr. Makubuya has taught at the University of Missouri- St. Louis since 2012, the same institution where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Dr. Makubuya holds an undergraduate degree in Environmental Management from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Together with his colleagues, he has so far mentored 14 doctors of education practice and doctors of philosophy with keen interests in social justice, critical race theory, and emancipation. Some of Dr. Makubuya’s publications have focused on leadership, health and fitness, and socioeconomic factors that influence health and wellbeing. In Running with Ahmaud Arbery, which appeared in the St. Louis American, Dr. Makubuya explores racial equity and violence in outdoor spaces. His most recent edited book, The Healing Power of Leadership: Lessons from the Coronavirus Lockdown is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing Company. Dr. Makubuya currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (2023-2026). Previously, Dr. Makubuya served as an Interim Head of Department, and an Interim Dean at an African University. Dr. Makubuya currently serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Sports Research in Uganda at UMSL.
