Marvin W. Berkowitz, Ph.D.
Sanford N. McDonnell Endowed Professor in Character Education

Dr. Marvin W. Berkowitz is the inaugural Sanford N. McDonnell Endowed Professor of Character Education, and Co-Director of the Center for Character and Citizenship at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and University of Missouri President’s Thomas Jefferson Professor. He has also served as the inaugural Ambassador H.H. Coors Professor of Character Development at the US Air Force Academy (1999), and Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Ethics Studies at Marquette University (1979-1999). He was also founder and Associate Director of the Center for Addiction and Behavioral Health Research in Milwaukee. Since 1999 he has directed the Leadership Academy in Character Education in St. Louis.

Donald A. Gouwens, Psy.D.
Associate Clinical Professor

Dr. Gouwens has served as Department Chair since 2012 and Program Coordinator for the UMSL School Psychology Program since 2001. He is a certified School Psychologist and Licensed Psychologist in Missouri, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, and is listed in the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. As a clinical faculty member, Dr. Gouwens does not have research expectations associated with his position; however, his expertise in the provision of individial, family, and systems-level psychological services and commitment to organizational change and best practices in schools and the community enhances the courses he teaches and enables him to in...

Rebecca Rogers, Ph.D.
E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor in Tutorial Education

Dr. Rogers is an educational researcher who specializes in literacy studies, teacher learning and critical discourse studies. Her research focuses on the socio-political contexts of literacy and language education and situates critical discourse analysis within an ethnographic tradition. She has published seven books and over 80 articles and chapters in national and international journals such as: Reading Research Quarterly, Linguistics & Education, Critical Discourse Studies, Discourse, Critical Inquiry into Language Studies, the Journal of Literacy Research, Review of Research in Education, Race, Ethnicity and Education, Teaching Education, Anthropology & Education Quarterly, Reading and Writing Quarterly ...
