Associate Professor
Dr. Candela is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education who started at UMSL in 2014. Her research interests include professional development of mathematics teachers, live coaching of mathematics teachers, how teachers perceive and use cognitively demanding tasks, and teachers' reflection on their implementation of cognitively demanding tasks. Dr. Candela is currently working with mathematics teachers by understanding what affects live coaching has on teachers' implementation of cogntively demanding tasks in their classrooms. Helene J. Sherman, Ed. D., is an Emeritus Professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education at Washington University in St. Louis and a masters and doctorate degree in education at UM-St. Louis. Dr. Sherman taught elementary school and mathematics in middle school and at community colleges. During her 25-year tenure at UM-SL, she taught undergraduate and graduate mathematics education and STEM courses.
