Emily Brown, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Emily Brown is an Assistant Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Education Sciences and Professional Programs. She received a BA from Wake Forest University, MA from University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and she worked as an elementary school counselor before obtaining her PhD in Counselor Education from University of Tennessee. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor.
R. Rocco Cottone, Ph.D.
Distinguished Research Professor
Professor Cottone received an A.B. degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.Ed. from the same institution. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from St. Louis University in 1980. He is certified as a family therapist by the NACFT.
So Rin Kim, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Dr. So Rin Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Sciences and Professional Programs. She holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Kim is a national certified counselor and has worked as a clinical mental health counselor and career counselor both in the US and South Korea since 2012.
At UMSL, Dr. Kim teaches courses in Helping Relationship Skills, Theories of Counseling, Psychopathology and Diagnosis, and Foundations of Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Mark Pope, Ed.D.

Mark Pope, Ed.D. received his A.B. (Political Science and Sociology) and M.Ed. (Counseling and Personnel Services) from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his Ed.D. (Counseling and Educational Psychology) from the University of San Francisco. Dr. Pope is a National Certified Counselor, Master Career Counselor, National Certified Career Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. He is also licensed as a professional counselor and psychologist in Missouri and as a clinical psychologist in Illinois. Dr. Pope also was appointed by UM-System as a Curators' Distinguished Professor.

Charles D. Schmitz, Ph.D. has been Dean and Professor of Counseling and Family Therapy in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis since 1996. Prior to that he was Dean and Professor at Baylor University in Texas. Before assuming the Baylor deanship he served in a variety of capacities at the University of Missouri-Columbia during a 23-year career including Professor of Educational and Counseling Psychology and Associate Dean. He holds the Ph.D., M.Ed., and B.S. Ed. degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
