Wolfgang Althof, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus

Wolfgang Althof was the Teresa M. Fischer Professor of Citizenship Education and served as the Executive Director of the Citizenship Education Clearing House (CECH) at the College of Education and the Co-Director (with Marvin W. Berkowitz) of the Center for Character and Citizenship from 2005-2016. Prior to coming to UM-St. Louis he was at the Department of Education, University of Fribourg, Switzerland. At UMSL, he teaches courses in Citizenship Education and Qualitative Social Research Methods. Virginia L. Navarro, Ph.D.
Associate Professor Emeritus

Virginia Navarro, Associate Professor in the Department of Educator Preparation, Innovation & Research at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, received her Ph.D. in educational psychology from Washington University in 1994. A former high school English and journalism teacher in both public and private schools, Dr. Navarro came to St. Louis from Chicago to complete a Masters in Teaching (in English) at Washington University and decided to put down roots in St. Louis raising four children with her husband of 45 years who now serves on the faculty in the College of Business. Her partial retirement plans include spending more time with their six delightful grandchildren.

April Regester received her Ph.D. In Special Education, Disabilities & Risk Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2009. She also holds a M.A. In Special Education, and a Preliminary Education Specialist Credential for students with moderate to severe disabilities.

Rebecca Rogers, Ph.D.
E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor in Tutorial Education

Dr. Rogers is an educational researcher who specializes in literacy studies, teacher learning and critical discourse studies. Her research focuses on the socio-political contexts of literacy and language education and situates critical discourse analysis within an ethnographic tradition. Alina Slapac, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educator Preparation & Leadership (2017-presently) who received The Chancellor's Award of Excellence in Teaching (UMSL, 2020),  Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award (UMSL, 2013), O.L.
