Wolfgang Althof, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus

Wolfgang Althof was the Teresa M. Fischer Professor of Citizenship Education and served as the Executive Director of the Citizenship Education Clearing House (CECH) at the College of Education and the Co-Director (with Marvin W. Berkowitz) of the Center for Character and Citizenship from 2005-2016. Prior to coming to UM-St. Louis he was at the Department of Education, University of Fribourg, Switzerland. At UMSL, he teaches courses in Citizenship Education and Qualitative Social Research Methods. Clark J. Hickman, Ed.D.
Emeritus Associate Dean And Emeritus Associate Research Professor

Dr. Clark Hickman earned his doctorate from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1993. He studies self-efficacy theory as it relates to motivation to learn, as well as student and instructor behaviors.

Carole Murphy, Ed.D.
Professor Emeritus

Carole H. Murphy is a 20-year veteran of the Texas public school system and an 18-year veteran of higher education. She is an internationally known educator in the fields of educational leadership and social studies education. She has worked as a teacher and an administrator in higher education and K-12 schools. For several years, she taught and was an administrator in the American International School System, Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition, she has been published in numerous international journals in the areas of professional development schools, cultural diversity, technology with students at both the K-12 and university levels, and in helping teachers understand action research.

Thomas R. Schnell, Ph.D.
Dean And Associate Professor Emeritus

Thomas Schnell received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a major in English and a minor in Speech. He received a Master of Science degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, majoring in Secondary Education-Reading and minoring in English literature. His Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Reading was awarded by SIU-Carbondale. Dr. Schnell taught in various Illinois high schools and one elementary school and at the St. Louis Community College district before coming to UM-St. Louis in 1971. Gwendolyn Y. Turner, Ed.D.
Professor Emeritus

Professor Turner received her Ed.D. and M.Ed. from the University of Arkansas and her BA from Arkansas State University. She has served as a Social Studies Teacher, Reading and Communications Specialist, Adult Educator, Educational Consultant and Teacher Educator. She has served as a board member of the College Reading Assocation, English Language Learning Center, Scholarship Foundation, and MO Partners of the Americas. She is a member of the National Conference for Research in Literacy, the International Reading Association, International Council on Education for Teaching, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa.
