Professional Associations
The Faculty of the Division of Counseling & Family Therapy are
active in the professional associations of counseling and psychology,
including holding offices, publishing in journals, and attending and
presenting papers at the annual conventions and conferences of these
associations. Students are expected to become a member, participate,
and attend these conventions and conferences as an integral part of
their professional preparation.
American Counseling Association (ACA) -- The largest association of professional counselors in the world. Also, the ACA Insurance Trust
is the source for professional liability insurance (required before
you may begin any of your practicum or field experience courses).
American Psychological Association (APA) --
The association for psychologists, including counseling
psychologists, clinical psychologists, industrial/organizational
psychologists, school psychologists, etc.
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) -- The association for professional school counselors.
Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) -- The national accreditation body for counseling programs.
National Career Development Association (NCDA) -- The professional association for career counselors.
National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
-- The certifying body for professional counselors, including Master
Addictions Counselors, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselors,
National Certified School Counselors, etc. This organization also
administers the National Counselor Examination -- the licensing
examination for Licensed Professional Counselors and the certification
examination for the National Certified Counselor credential.
Society of Counseling Psychology
-- The professional association for counseling psychologists, also
known as Division 17 of the American Psychological Association.
