Faculty Assembly

I. Report from Interim Dean – Ann Taylor

Interim Dean Taylor introduced Chris Sheetz from the Be Inspire Campaign.

Chris Sheetz announced that Be Inspire is a faculty and staff giving campaign.  The campaign is about how many employees believe in the university’s mission and contribute part of themselves and to the work they do every day.

Bill Klein, English Department, gave his reason why he gives to the university.

Dr. Nancy Singer added that she has a list of COE scholarships that the faculty and staff can donate to through the Be Inspire Campaign.

Interim Dean Taylor introduced the new Provost Kristin Sobolik.

Provost Kristin Sobolik comes from Wright State University where she has been dean of the College of Liberal Studies and professor of anthropology since 2013.  Provost Sobolik will start her new position on June 1, 2017.

Provost Sobolik announced that the College of Education is the first college that she has been exploring.  She is interested in the faculty and staff thoughts and concerns about a search for a permanent dean. She will also be meeting with the leadership team and stakeholders of the college.

II. Report of the Faculty Affairs Council – Rocco Cottone

Faculty assembly voted on nominees for the COE Bylaws committees.  The committee terms are effective, Fall 2017.

III. Report of the Graduate Education Council – Donald Gouwens

Motion was made to approve new courses proposal:

  • TCH ED 6273: Geometry and Measurement for Elementary Mathematics Specialist; 
  • TCH ED 6274: Algebraic Reasoning for Elementary Mathematics Specialists;
  • TCH ED 6276: Data and Probalility for Elementary Mathematics Specialists;
  • TCH ED 6277: Foundations of Mathematics Leadership for Elementary Mathematics Specialist;
  • TCH ED 6283: Internship-Geometry/Measurement in Elementary Schools;
  • TCH ED 6284: Internship-Algebraic Reasoning in Elementary Schools;
  • MID ED 5989: Practicum I: Middle Education Site Based Experience;
  • SPEC ED 5989: Practicum I: Special Education Site Based Experience;

Motion approved.

IV. Report of the Teacher Education, EPIR – April Regester

Motion was made to drop the following program and courses:

  • ECETS-BS3: BSEd Special Education;
  • SPEC ED 4990: Special Education Student Teaching I;
  • SPEC ED 4991: Special Education Student Teaching II;

Motion approved.

V. Faculty Senators (Bredemeier, Husbye, Cochran, and Kashubeck-West)

VI. Doctoral Program – Bill Kyle

Dr. Bill Kyle announced that the revised Ph.D. program was approved by the Graduate Council.  The program is effective in fall 2018.

VII. Report from the Chairs – Donald Gouwens and Nancy Singer

VIII. School Leadership Program – James Shuls

IX. Enrollment-Advising – Shawn Woodhouse

Dr. Shawn Woodhouse announced that OASIS is working on a plan to get students with GPA below 2.0 up to academic standards.

X. Announcements

Dr. Nicholas Husbye asked faculty to respond to the email that was sent out to vote for the COE University Libraries representative, so he can report it to the Committee on Committee.

Dr. Susan Kashubeck-West announced that CFO Rick Baniak reported that the university budget is in good condition. In June, the university will be in the black.

Interim Dean Taylor added that the problem is the State will not be funding Higher Education.  We managed to achieved a degree of financial responsibilities, but we are not in a healthy state, yet. The university sent a message to UM-System that UMSL knows what we are doing financially.
