Faculty Assembly

I. Report from Interim Dean – Ann Taylor

Dean Ann Taylor introduced Chancellor Thomas George to present the University of Missouri Thomas Jefferson Award to Dr. Mark Pope.  The Thomas Jefferson Award honors a member of the University of Missouri community who “through personal influence and performance of duty in teaching, writing and scholarship, character and influence, devotion and loyalty to the University best exemplifies the principles and ideals of Thomas Jefferson.”

Dean Taylor also announced that Dr. Kim Song received President Inter-Campus Award last week.

Dean Taylor announced that Dr. Matthew Davis will be the guest speaker for the “Last Lecture” Series on May 24.

Dean Taylor announced the retirees for 2018 and thanked them for their years of service:

  • Dr. Mark Pope
  • Dr. Wolfgang Althof
  • Dr. Brenda Bredemeier

Dean Taylor announced that there will be a “Graduation Reception” for the spring 2018 graduates in the ED Collabitat on May 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Dean Taylor announced that Chancellor Thomas F. George and Dr. Barbara Harback will have an Evening Honoring Friends of the College of Education.  They will welcome the new Dean, celebrate the 40th anniversary of the doctoral program, and honor the Class of 1968 on their golden reunion.

Dean Taylor thanked the seasonal staff for carrying the workload until our new staff was hired.

Dean Taylor announced the following faculty leaving the university:

  • Dr. Charis Price
  • Dr. Nicholas Husbye
  • Dr. Ralph Cordova

Dean Taylor congratulated:

  • Dr. Lynn Navin for receiving her doctorate degree, spring 2018.
  • Dr. Michael Bahr for publishing an article. 
  • Dr. Cody Ding for publishing a book.
  • Drs. Michael Bahr, Theresa Coble, and Natalie Bolton for service on the Academic Prioritization Committee.

Dean Taylor announced that there were 58 freshmen admitted to the College.  On April 26, faculty and staff will call the students to welcome them to the college.

Dean Taylor concluding statement was, “Next year, let’s look at what matters to us (College) and what does not.”

II. Report from CPCQ - Michael Bahr

Dr. Michael Bahr announced that the following program and course proposals were approved. 

  • Ed.D. Learning Community Proposal: Higher Education
  • CNS ED 3200: Interpersonal Skill in Helping Relationships
  • ED ADM-MA2: M.Ed. in Education Administration, with Emphasis School Administration
  • ED ADM-EDS: Ed.S.in Education Administration

Doctoral Dissertation and Travel Grant Subcommittee (Dr. Patricia Kopetz):
Dr. Kopetz announced that the Spring 2018 Dissertation and Conference Travel Scholarship was awarded to 12 students.

III. Report from Faculty Affairs Council - Rocco Cottone

- No report

IV. FAC Research Subcommittee – Rocco Cottone

Dr. Rocco Cottone introduced the Spotlight Speaker Timothy Makubuya.
Dr. Makubuya presented his research on “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow: My Research Trajectory.” 

V. Report from Dean’s Committee on Social Justice – Theresa Coble and Timothy Makubuya

Dr. Timothy Makubuya announced that there are still dates May 5, and June 2, for the Dean’s Committee on Social Justice to engage the community through the Delmar Loop UMSL Talks Fame. They will be in the loop engaging passersby in short 10 minutes talks on key St. Louisans.

VI. Report from the Chairs – Donald Gouwens and Nancy Singer

Dr. Gouwens announced that Dr. Phillip Waalkes accepted the assistant professor position in the Department of Education Sciences and Professional Programs.

Dr. Nancy Singer added that two tenure-track positions will be filled.

VII. Faculty Senate Report – Brenda Bredemeier

VIII. Finance-HR – Tina Hyken

Tina Hyken announced that the prediction for COE FY2019 will be down 3%, and the campus is predicting 4% down.  Tina also stated the faculty travel has been approved for $1,000 and $4,000 has been approved for doctoral travel.

XI. Reports from Faculty on campus-wide and University-wide committees

Academic Advisory Committee – Judith Cochran

Dr. Judith Cochran announced that before faculty put an online course on Canvas, it has to be approved by the Center of Teaching and Learning.  Dr. Cochran also stated that they are offering a scholarship for tutoring.
