R. Rocco Cottone, Ph.D.
Professor

Professor Cottone received an A.B. degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.Ed. from the same institution. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from St. Louis University in 1980. He is certified as a family therapist by the NACFT.

M. Lee Nelson, Ph.D.
Teaching Professor

Lee Nelson is an adjunct professor in the Counselor Education program. She teaches  counselor education and supervision courses at UMSL and is conducting research on social class identity.  She completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Oregon in 1989.  Lee served as a counselor educator on the educational psychology faculty of the University of Washington from 1990-2002 and is a retired professor of counseling psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she served from 2002-2010 (chair, 2006-2008).  Lee's research has emphasized counselor training and supervision, gender issues in counseling, adolescent body image, and the psychological experience of so...

Mark Pope, Ed.D. received his A.B. (Political Science and Sociology) and M.Ed. (Counseling and Personnel Services) from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his Ed.D. (Counseling and Educational Psychology) from the University of San Francisco. Dr. Pope is a National Certified Counselor, Master Career Counselor, National Certified Career Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. He is also licensed as a professional counselor and psychologist in Missouri and as a clinical psychologist in Illinois. Charles D. Schmitz, Ph.D. has been Dean and Professor of Counseling and Family Therapy in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis since 1996. Prior to that he was Dean and Professor at Baylor University in Texas. Before assuming the Baylor deanship he served in a variety of capacities at the University of Missouri-Columbia during a 23-year career including Professor of Educational and Counseling Psychology and Associate Dean. He holds the Ph.D., M.Ed., and B.S. Phillip Waalkes, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor

Phillip Waalkes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Sciences and Professional Programs. He received his bachelor's degree in English and Psychology from Hope College and his Master's in School Counseling from Western Carolina University. After working for about 5 years as a school counselor in a rural K-12 school, he obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His research interests include the development of teaching and research in counselor educators, career and college counseling for first-generation college students, qualitative research methods, and the development of school counselors.
