Everyday Politics of Racial Injustice in Schools

This learning community will explore the everyday politics of racial injustice and the myriad ways to remedy such circumstances. We will draw inspiration from Robin Kelly (Freedom Dreams, 2003): “What are today’s activists dreaming about?” The learning community will be drawn from “today’s activists,” whether they’ve considered themselves such or not.

The themes for the learning community will be:

  1. The myriad of ways in which Black humanity is routinely denied in Black classrooms. Thus, this learning community will perform “radical dreaming” toward embodied humanity that was a staple of Black classrooms of the past. In this way, we can collectively revive the DuBois’ “New Dawn” of learning possibilities for self-deterministic Black students and their teachers.
  2. The learning community, through counter-public modeling, will investigate the deliberations needed to enlist co-conspirators to this enterprise.
  3. Third, members of this learning community will learn to exhibit the “radical hope” necessary to carry realized decision of racial justice to fruition.
  4. Last, this learning community will deeply examine critical counter-storytelling (through the means of autoethnography) to build the “Black study” theorizing necessary for such an endeavor.

The co-directors of this learning community welcome adult learners from non-traditional educational backgrounds.
