Engage Students with Music

Full Degree Title: Bachelor of Music, Music Education

Approximately 130 hours leading to Missouri state teaching certification in vocal and instrumental teaching for music, K-12. Classes are offered mainly during the day, and some required courses are held in the evening.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree at the University of Missouri - St. Louis balances performing, academic, educational and technological aspects of music to prepare 21st century teachers.

Students work with dynamic music education faculty and professional musicians drawn from the St. Louis area including members of the St. Louis Symphony and the Arianna String Quartet. Their goals: to engage, to inspire, to challenge.

UMSL is a large, urban research university with active education and community partnerships including the E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Theatre Saint Louis. These partnerships allow students to become part of the educational fabric of St. Louis well before graduation.

The UMSL Department of Music is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Education alumnus James Young wins Ferguson-Florissant School District Teacher of the Year

In addition to the requirement for a successful audition on their primary instrument, piano and guitar students applying for the BM: Music Education program must also successfully audition for the full participation in (1) Applied Music (seven hours) and University Singers (for those seeking vocal/choral certification), or (2) Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Orchestra (for those seeking instrumental certification).

All B.M. in Music Education majors must meet the university and college general education requirements.
GPA Requirement
Students enrolled in B.M. in music education must maintain minimum GPAs (2.75 cumulative; 3.0 music; and 3.0 professional education).
Proficiency Exam
Students working toward certification in choral/vocal or instrumental music K-12 are required to pass a keyboard proficiency examination before admission to student teaching in music, usually before or during the sixth semester of their program.
