Professor Vatterott received a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1972, a Master's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1978, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from St. Louis University in 1981. Professor Vatterott began working at UM-St. Louis as an adjunct in 1981 and began a full-time position in 1991. She was formerly a junior high school teacher and a middle school principal. She serves on the Board of Directors for DeLaSalle Middle School, a Catholic college-prep middle school that serves disadvantaged students from the Ville neighborhood in North St. Louis.

Dr. Vatterott is widely regarded as a international expert on the topic of K-12 homework. She is the author of Rethinking Homework: Best Practices That Support Diverse Needs (ASCD, 2009, 2nd edition in press). Her most recent article about homework appeared in the March 2017  issue of Educational Leadership. She first became interested in homework as the frustrated parent of a 5th grader with learning disabilities. Since then, she has presented her homework research to over 10,000 educators and parents in the United States, Canada, and Europe and She has been interviewed as a homework expert for radio and television and for articles appearing in major newspapers in the United Stes and Canada, including the New York Times, USA Today, such magazines as Parents, Better Homes and Gardens, Child, and Working Mother, and for articles appearing in numerous U.S. newspapers and educational websites.

Her research about K-12 homework has led to new research in K-12 standards-based grading and led to her latest book Rethinking Grading. (ASCD,2015). She frequently presents at international, national, and regional conferences, most often about the topics of homework and standards-based grading practices.

Her teaching interests include work with studio schools and the continued refinement of the middle school certification program, advising teacher candidates, and teaching courses in the middle level child, and middle level curriculum, and middle level philosophy.
