Do you enjoy fitness activities? The Exercise Science major in the Bachelor of Educational Studies allows prepares graduates to seek careers that promote health, wellness, and fitness in those of all ages in non-school settings. Graduates can enter some careers directly while seeking graduate programs for other careers. The UMSL Exercise Science program emphasizes hands-on experience through internship opportunities in a range of settings. Settings may include corporate fitness centers, health clubs, private studios, college recreation centers, and collegiate athletic programs.

Program of Study: The Exercise Science degree builds on science and mathematics courses in the general education requirements with courses on anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, safety and emergency care, designing physical activity programs, nutrition, and adult exercise leadership. Internships are spread over three semester and majors are prepared to sit for certification examinations, such as those offered by the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the Aerobics and Fitness Association of American, and the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers.

Careers: Upon graduation, exercise science majors can pursue careers in personal training, including corporate, public, and private health and fitness programs. With experience, graduates can easily take on health club management or ownership. Exercise science graduates also can seek positions as strength and conditioning coaches. The program of study provides opportunities to obtain the certifications that employer's desire. Graduates also can choose to enter graduate programs to further specialize in athletic training, cardiac rehabilitation, or exercise physiology research.

Bachelor of Educational Studies

The B. E. S. is a  professional degree designed for individuals who wish to study Education as a  scholarly discipline in preparation for a career in one of four areas:

(1) Early Childhood

(2) Exercise Science and Wellness

(3) Park and Museum Programs

(4) Youth and Adult Development

Students follow the University's General Education Requirements, Mathematical Skills, Advanced Expository Writing, American History and Government, and Cultural Diversity Requirements. Due to prerequisites of required courses all students must take PSYCH 1003 and POL SCI 1100. Students pursuing the Exercise Science emphasis area must take BIOL 1012BIOL 1013, and MATH 1030.
