David Light Shields, Ph.D., is an Affiliate Associate Professor in
the Division of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Shields’ educational
research has focused on social and moral development, and he also
has expertise in citizenship education. Dr. Shields is the author,
co-author, or editor of three books and has authored or co-authored
more than 30 research articles or book chapters. Prior to coming to
the University of Missouri St. Louis, Dr. Shields was the Co-Director
the University of Notre Dame’s Mendelson Center for Sports,
Character and Community. While in Indiana, he was appointed by Governor
O’Bannon to the Governor’s Task Force on Character Education.
Dr. Shields earned his Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in
Berkeley, California.
