She taught at the elementary, middle school, community college, and university levels, the latter in the areas of mathematics and mathematics education. Dr. Sherman served as president of the Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis and the St. Louis Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa as well as an executive board member of the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In 1995, Dr. Sherman received the outstanding College Teaching Award from both organizations. She is the recipient of the 1997 University of Missouri-St. Louis Distinguished Alumni Award , 1998 Emerson Electric Outstanding Teaching Award, the College Distinguished Faculty Award in 2000 and named the campus representative for the Governor's Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2003. She is also a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association of Mathematics Educators, and Phi Delta Kappa.

Research and Teaching
Dr. Sherman teaches mathematics education courses in addition to her duties as Associated Dean. Her research is focused upon effective instructional practices for teaching elementary and middle level mathematics and is specifically interested in the usage of manipulatives related to concept development and investigating models of staff development for K-8 mathematics teachers. Her goal is to share strategies which enable youngsters to develop and practice strong mathematical understanding through participatory hands-on lessons.
