Dr. Karen Keller completed her doctoral work at the University of
Missouri-St. Louis in 1992. Her dissertation topic, Reflection-Impulsivity
as a Function of Language Level in Deaf Children, reflects her interest
in the education of children with hearing-impairments. Her undergraduate
work at Allegheny College, and graduate degree from Northwestern University,
are in English; she taught in the English departments of Dakota Wesleyan
University (SD) and Miami University (Ohio) before beginning a new
career in Special Education.
Dr. Keller teaches courses in Special Education for the Division
of Teaching and Learning; her areas of special interest are Behavior/Emotional
Disorders and Classroom Management. She presents lectures and workshops
on positive behavior modification and the benefits of Applied Behavior
Analysis for children with autism.
She works with Dr. Stephen Viola in the Transition to Teaching Special
Education Programs, offering a variety of alternative teacher certification
plans. She teaches a variety of courses for these programs.
Dr. Keller has worked on grant-funded projects assessing the effectiveness
of private educational programs for children with autism, rewriting
the curriculum for children with developmental disabilities, and addressing
the educational concerns of dissimilar learners.
