Carl Hoagland is the Emerson Electric Endowed
Professor of Technology and Learning and the Director of the E. Desmond
Lee Technology and Learning Center. He previously served as
the Executive Director of The Regional Consortium for Education and
Technology, a technology center that served over 30 K-12 school districts
in Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois. Dr. Hoagland has held academic
appointments at the University of Massachusetts, Webster University,
National Teacher Training College in Maseru, Lesotho, Incarnate Word
University, Washington University and St. Louis University.
Dr. Hoagland holds a B.S. from
Texas Lutheran University. After graduation, Dr. Hoagland did graduate
work at the University of Stockholm, where he studied mathematics
and Swedish. He received his Ed.D. from the University of Massachusetts
with an emphasis in the area of science education.
Dr. Hoagland has authored numerous
school district technology plans, books, journal articles and monographs.
His work has appeared in publications in the US as well as in Africa.
While working for the United Nations Scientific, Education and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) in Lesotho, he was a founding faculty member
of the National Teacher Training College. He supervised the development
of all of the self-instructional materials used in the college, the
development of microteaching and the development and implementation
a one-year paid internship.
Dr. Hoagland has received various awards for his work in education and
for his community work. Of his many educational honors and awards,
he is extremely proud of being selected as Outstanding Future Teacher
and Outstanding Faculty Member. These awards reflect his greatest pleasures,
supporting educators to become increasingly more thoughtful and reflective,
and working with his colleagues. He has also received recognition
for his extensive work with community groups including the United Nations
Association, Planned Parenthood, the Boy Scouts and Parents and Friends
of Gays. Dr. Hoagland has served on multiple boards that are dedicated
to furthering the causes of education or creating a better global community.
Currently he serves on the Center for Emerging Technology and the United
Nations Association of St. Louis.
