Dr.
Stephen Viola completed his Ph.D. in May 1997 at Indiana State University.
His doctoral dissertation examined the perceptions of parents of children
with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He is currently involved
in international special education initiatives in Russia, Poland,
South Africa, Kenya, and Croatia. He has presented at more than 30
international concerns on topics including sensory integration, ADHD,
autism, school psychological assessment, teacher preparation, and
distance education.
Teaching:
Dr. Viola currently directs the Special Education Transition Program,
the Special Education Innovative Certification Program, and the Transition
to Teaching Program. These are all alternative teacher certification
programs. He teaches various courses in each of the programs.
Research:
Dr. Viola’s research interests include sensory integration
theory and application for children with autism spectrum disorder
and for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He
also co-directs the Pupil Project at UM-St. Louis which is a collaborative
effort between the College of Education and the College of Optometry
addressing learning related vision problems in students.
Grants and Projects:
Dr. Viola has secured more than $2.1 million in external funding
for the various projects he directs.
