Dr.
Ken Owen earned his Ed.D., in Educational Administration from St.
Louis University in 1993. Other degrees held include a Specialist
in Education Administration, and a Masters in Secondary Education
Administration, both from Southeast Missouri University, Cape Girardeau,
Missouri, and BSE in Social/Political Science, Arkansas State University,
Jonesboro, Arkansas. Dr. Owen holds certifications in social science,
the middle and secondary principalship, and school superintendency.
Dr. Owen came to the University of MO-St. Louis in August 2000, after
retiring from public education in June 2000, where he spent thirty
years as teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of secondary
education, assistant superintendent, associate superintendent, and
superintendent. He has also served as an adjunct professor with numerous
other colleges and universities, including Jefferson College, Missouri
Baptist College, Southeast Missouri State University, and Central
Missouri State University.
He has held active membership in the Missouri Association of Secondary
School Principals, Mineral Area Association of School Administration,
Missouri State Teachers Association, Southeast Regional Tech Prep
Consortium, National Association of School Administrators, National
Association of Secondary School Principals, Phi Delta Kappa, Missouri
School Improvement Program, Missouri A+ Schools Program, Rotary International,
Lions Club, and Chamber of Commerce.
Professor Owen’s research has focused on several educational
topics including job satisfaction among high school administrators,
gifted and enrichment education; grant writing, statewide curriculum
development and implementation, administrator’s evaluation techniques,
tech prep education, applied/contextual methodologies, and the Missouri
A+ Schools Program.
He has taught a variety of courses including School Finance, School
Law, Building and Sites, Professional Negotiations, Elem. School Administration,
Secondary School Administration, Foundations of School Administration,
Ethics of School Administration, Educational Psychology, grant writing,
the Principal’s Academy, tech prep, applied/contextual academics,
curriculum development/design, leadership training for counselors
and principals and internship portfolios.
