How do I become certified (checklist)

Note: Missouri does not allow for alternative certification programs in Early Childhood, Elementary or Physical Education certification.


What should I do in order to become a Certified Teacher?

Academic advising is an important service you will receive while at UM-St. Louis. It is essential that you see an advisor in theTeacher Certification and Advising Office to evaluate/transfer courses and plan your program. We suggest you to speak with your advisor each semester or at least once a year. Your first appointment will serve to explain the information you need to proceed through the program. In order to progress from one level to the next in the professional education program, you must complete and have verified a number of experiences, documents and accomplishments. Below, by level, is to help guide you through the requirements for each level.

Level I

I.Complete all coursework requirements for TCH ED 2210, 2211, 2212 II. Complete Formal Application to Teacher Education Program ( 60 Hour From)

Acceptance of this application is required before entrance to Level 2 coursework. The official application is located online,on the College of Education homepage and verifies the student having completed the following requirements:

  1. 60 hours of acceptable college credits that include successful completion of all Level I Course work.
  2. Police Background Check-a new check is completed every semester. You must go to the Teacher Certification and Advising to obtain the correct form.
  3. 2.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) This average includes all colleges attended, both undergraduate and post-baccalaureate.
  4. An ACT score of at least 20 or an SAT score of at least 800 These scores must be officially submitted by the testing service to the Admission Office at the UM-St. Louis or by sending your high school to the Admissions Office. If it is necessary to track down your test results, ACT and SAT phone numbers are available in theTeacher Certification and Advising Office.
  5. C-Base scores of at least 235 on all subtests.   This is offered on-campus five (5) times each year, with results arriving within 6 weeks. If you already have a bachelor's degree you are not required to submit C-Base scores. Testing information is available in the Teacher Certification and Advising Office.

III. Receiving Notification of Admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP)

Once you have been accepted into the Teacher Education Program, you will receive electronic notification. As you continue through the program, you should meet with your advisor regularly to ensure that you are meeting the necessary requirements to progress through your selected program. (NOTE: Secondary Education students must also meet with their subject area advisor in order to ensure that content area requirements are being met.)



Level II

Complete Course Requirements for: 3310, 3312, 3313, and 3315 or 4391


Level III

III: Submitting Formal Application for Internship and Student Teaching

Students in all areas of certification, must complete an Internship/Student Teaching Application. The application is found online at http://coe.umsl.edu/offices/certification/index.html , by clicking on the ‘online student teaching application' link.

  1.   Notification is sent to you through the mail and/or by email to your UM-St. Louis email account.
  2. Register for the PRAXIS Exit Exam and take it during your internship semester.
  3. This test must be passed in order for you to graduate and be recommended for certification. THIS IS A STATE REQUIREMENT. When registering for the test and on the day you take the test, you must request that the results be sent to the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
  4. Complete any delayed grades, grade modifications, or correspondence courses which might prevent your from progressing into student teaching, graduation and/or teacher certification.


IV. The Graduation and Certification Process

A. Receive graduation/certification check letter from coordinators or advisors indicating that you have no deficiencies related to student teaching and/or graduation/certification.

B.Complete and submit for final approval your Certification Portfolio. You must complete and pass the portfolio requirement before your name will be submitted to DESE for certification.

C. Notify the campus Admissions Office and Teacher Certification and Advising Office of any name changes or address changes you have or may make.

D. Make cap and gown arrangement for graduation through the UM-St. Louis Bookstore in the Millennium Student Center.

E. Register with the UM-St. Louis Career Services Office (optional but highly recommended) to prepare for your first job search. You may also want to attend job fairs help on campus.

F. Seek advisement if you have any questions or concerns about your graduation or certification status.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. Please remember that from the time of graduation or the completion of all requirements, it can take as long as six or eight weeks to receive your state teaching certificate.

2. You must demonstrate adherence to the Teacher's Code of Ethics throughout the entire program, especially as it relates to clinical experiences

3. The last 30 semester hours of the Education degree/certification must be taken at UM-St. Louis. If you wish to graduate with Latin Honors (e.g. cum laude), you must have attended UM-St. Louis for at least 56 semester hours (see UM-St. Louis Bulletin for more details).
