Beginning Teachers Assistance Program

The Department of Elementary and Secondary (DESE) requires that new education professionals participate in a university-based new teacher certification program within the first five years of teaching in order to maintain their certification.  To that end, the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, offers the Beginning Teacher Assistance Program (BTAP) for to its own and St. Louis area colleges of education graduates.  Novice regular and special education K-12 teachers are invited to attend.

The purpose of BTAP is to enhance the beginning teachers’ experience so that they feel supported and ultimately stay in the profession.

We provide new teachers the opportunities to:

• Develop professional relationships with university faculty to share best practices based on research.
• Reflect on and set goals for teaching practice without the pressure of evaluation.
• Cultivate an attitude of continuous improvement through reflection and discussion.
• Meet together in a supportive environment where both professional and personal questions, concerns, and doubts can be addressed.

Our university-based network for teachers includes choices of two Saturday workshops as seen below:

BTAP workshops held on October 4, 2008 and February 21, 2009 will be located in room 78 in the J.C. Penny Building on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus, from 8:30 to 12:00 pm. Participants choose one of the dates for attendance.
