About Us
Dr. Joseph Polman, the principal investigator (PI) of the grant, is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Division of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). He has a Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences, and has conducted research and development related to technology-supported inquiry learning of science for over 15 years.
Dr. Wendy Saul is a co-PI on the grant and serves as the Allan B. and Helen S. Shopmaker Professor of Education and International Studies and works in collaboration with Springboard to Learning & Young Audiences of St Louis at UMSL. She has received several NSF grants to study science-literacy connections and publishes widely in this area.
Cathy Farrar is also a co-PI on the grant and the Science Department Chair at Normandy High School (MO) in the Normandy School District. She has taught Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Forensics. Currently, she is enrolled at the UMSL as a Doctoral student in the Teaching and Learning Division of the College of Education.
Dr. Alan Newman is a co-PI on the grant and a Research Professor in the College of Education at UMSL. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry and has conducted basic research at various universities and Brookhaven National Laboratory, but most of his career—over 20 years—has been spent as a science journalist and managing editor.
Dr. Brian Hand is the chief outside evaluator for the grant, and a Professor of Science Education and coordinator of the science education program in the College of Education at the University of Iowa. Before coming to the University of Iowa, he taught secondary science for 11 years and was Professor and Director of the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education at Iowa State University.
Diane Miller, Vice President of Community Science Programs and Partnerships at the Saint Louis Science Center, oversees the Youth Exploring Science (YES) program, which is an active partner on the grant. Under her leadership, YES has an excellent record of recruiting and retaining low-income, minority teens from community organizations to work on science-related activities.
Laura Pearce Is a former public school teacher, having taught 20+ years in K-5. Currently she is a graduate assistant in the doctoral program at the University of Missouri–Saint Louis. She is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching (1995).
