It is a pleasure to welcome you to the website for the Center for Excellence in Urban Education. It is hoped that the content contained in the website will be useful in providing guidance and direction in the work that must be done in improving the teaching and learning process in urban education. The five correlates of effective schools as championed by Dr. Ronald Edmonds offer a pathway in assisting to create excellence in urban school. Those correlates are:

1. Strong instructional leadership
2. Positive school environment
3. High expectations for all students
4. Emphasis on the basic skills
5. Continuous program of assessment

The degree to which these correlates can become a reality in urban schools will, in large part, determine whether the goal of excellence in urban education will be achieved.
